Exclusive Streaming Rights Secured

Xbox has managed to land a deal for the exclusive game streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI, according to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans. The details of the agreement were initially hinted at by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma during an employee all-hands meeting, where she told employees that Microsoft is getting ready to do something around Grand Theft Auto VI that "no other platform holder is doing."

The strategic move means that only Xbox Cloud Gaming will be able to stream Grand Theft Auto VI to players at launch. While the exact duration of the agreement remains unclear, it provides a substantial advantage for Microsoft's cloud ecosystem as anticipation for the title reaches its peak.

Impact on PC Players and Consoles

Because Rockstar Games still has not officially announced a PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI, this newly secured deal gives Xbox a unique pathway to market its cloud platform. The arrangement allows Xbox Cloud Gaming to reach PC players who would otherwise need to purchase an Xbox Series X / S or a PS5 console to experience the game.

The arrival of the streaming rights aligns with Microsoft's broader updates to its cloud gaming ecosystem, which are scheduled to go live in November.

Cloud Gaming Changes and Pay-As-You-Go Options

The announcement of the exclusive streaming rights follows Microsoft's introduction of significant modifications to Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting in November—the same month Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release—Microsoft is implementing streaming hour limits. These caps restrict usage to 15 hours for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, 10 hours for Premium subscribers, and five hours for Game Pass Essential users.

To accommodate players who do not subscribe to Game Pass, Microsoft is simultaneously launching a pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming next month. This payment model is timed to coincide with Grand Theft Auto VI, enabling individuals who primarily play on mobile phones or lack traditional consoles to stream the game by purchasing specific bundles of hours.

Future Hardware and Project Helix

Alongside the cloud streaming updates, CEO Asha Sharma also provided employees with updates regarding Project Helix, which represents the next generation of Xbox hardware. Sharma confirmed that the upcoming hardware will function as a "family of devices" and noted that Microsoft intends to collaborate with outside partners on several of these hardware units.

This vision builds on previous statements made by Sharma and follows a formal announcement regarding hardware cooperation. The hardware roadmap is anchored by a strategic multi-year partnership established between Microsoft and AMD to develop a comprehensive portfolio of devices, including the next-generation Xbox console.
