Google Signs Nuclear Energy Deal with Constellation

Google has announced a major new nuclear energy agreement with Constellation to supply electricity for its power-hungry data centers, tackling growing grid strain.

Google Signs Nuclear Energy Deal with Constellation

Google and Constellation Partner for Nuclear Power

Google signed long-term agreements meant to cover the costs of upgrades at nuclear power plants as the tech giant works to generate more electricity for its power-hungry data centers. The company announced a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation, the leading nuclear power plant operator in the United States, as detailed in a recent press release.

The agreement is designed to guarantee the necessary revenue to cover the cost of efficiency upgrades at existing nuclear plants. According to the announcement, the initiative represents more than $4.3 billion of new investment by Constellation over the course of the partnership.

Capacity Expansion and Upgrades

Over the next five years, the companies expect that new equipment installed at each site will collectively lead to 890 megawatts of additional nuclear capacity. Google and Constellation note that this figure is roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity generated by one large new nuclear reactor or three small modular reactors.

The operational upgrades will focus on modernizing 11 reactors across six sites located in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Each of these facilities connects directly to the PJM Interconnection grid.

Grid Pressures and PJM Interconnection Challenges

The PJM grid stands as the largest power grid in the US, spanning 13 states and the District of Columbia. This region includes the nation’s largest hub for data centers in Loudoun County, Virginia, which has experienced notable regional growth and associated infrastructure strain.

However, PJM has struggled lately to meet growing demand from AI data centers. An independent market monitor previously filed a complaint warning that PJM was planning to allow massive data centers to connect to the grid before it could reliably serve them, potentially risking blackouts.

Regulatory Actions and Energy Supply Agreements

Government officials have previously intervened regarding grid capacity issues. In January, the Trump administration and regional governors issued a joint statement calling on PJM to hold an "emergency" power auction to support the swift construction of new power plants through long-term contracts.

Although a subsequent auction was planned, PJM postponed its auction following a directive from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to strengthen protections against rising electricity bills for regular customers. Meanwhile, electricity rates have climbed significantly across connected states like New Jersey, jumping 54 percent over a five-year period.

Broader Energy Supply and Corporate Sustainability Goals

In addition to the nuclear power purchase agreement, Google secured a separate, larger 15-year energy supply agreement with Constellation. This 2,700-megawatt supply deal guarantees continued revenue for other existing power plants operated by Constellation within the PJM footprint, regardless of fuel type.

Data centers continue to drive a surge in new gas infrastructure projects throughout the US, creating challenges for major tech companies attempting to reach internal sustainability targets. Google's latest sustainability report indicated that its carbon emissions rose by 18 percent last year alongside a 37 percent jump in overall electricity demand.

As the technology sector navigates these rising power demands, energy investments like the Constellation partnership highlight the growing intersection between digital infrastructure expansion and regional power grid developments.
