GitHub makes Xcode 27 runner image generally available
GitHub has moved its Xcode 27 runner image from public preview to general availability. The GitHub-hosted image runs on macOS 27 and includes the Xcode 27 toolchain and Apple SDKs.

Xcode 27 image reaches general availability
GitHub has made its Xcode 27 runner image generally available for users building and testing Apple applications with GitHub Actions. The image was previously offered in public preview, and the change gives projects access to the same Xcode 27-based environment as a generally available GitHub-hosted runner image.
The company described the update in a GitHub Changelog post published on October 15. The announcement focuses on making the image available for Apple application workflows, without introducing a separate set of project requirements or workflow changes for users already using the relevant runner labels.
macOS 27 and Apple development tools
The GitHub-hosted image runs on macOS 27 and includes the Xcode 27 toolchain along with Apple SDKs. That combination provides the operating-system environment and development software needed by the GitHub Actions jobs that use the image to build and test Apple applications.
GitHub presents the image as a toolchain-focused choice for workflows. Rather than describing the runner only by its operating system, the company says each image supports one major Xcode version. This approach is intended to make it easier for developers to select the toolchain their project needs and understand what each runner provides.
Workflow configuration remains label-based
To use the Xcode 27 environment, a workflow must set its runs-on: value to one of the labels listed in GitHub’s announcement. The supplied announcement does not reproduce those labels, so teams should use the exact supported value provided by GitHub rather than infer a label from the operating-system or toolchain names.
Projects that already use the relevant labels do not need to change their workflows. The general-availability transition therefore leaves those existing configurations in place while making the Xcode 27 image available beyond its earlier public-preview status.
The update applies to the runner image used by GitHub Actions workflows. It does not state that projects need to rewrite their build steps, change their application code, or adopt a different workflow structure to use the image.
Apple Silicon availability only
The Xcode 27 image is available on Apple Silicon arm64 runners only. GitHub explicitly says that the image is not available on Intel runners, making the processor architecture an important consideration for teams selecting a runner for their Apple application jobs.
The announcement does not provide additional compatibility details beyond the arm64 limitation. It identifies the runner as a GitHub-hosted image and distinguishes Apple Silicon availability from Intel support, but does not claim that the image can be used on Intel-based infrastructure.
Software details and issue reporting
Developers who need to inspect the software installed on the image can consult the actions/runner-images repository. GitHub directs users there both to view installed software and to report an issue with the runner image.
The repository is the relevant destination for operational details about the image, while the changelog announcement records its move to general availability. Together, the two resources cover the image’s status and the place where developers can check its software contents or raise problems.
GitHub’s update gives Apple application projects a generally available Xcode 27 option within GitHub Actions. The image is defined by the Xcode 27 toolchain, runs on macOS 27, and is restricted to Apple Silicon arm64 runners, with existing workflows preserved when they already use the supported labels.
