Sony Announces New Wireless Audio Kit

Sony has announced the ECM-W5, a $400 wireless microphone kit designed to offer straightforward operation for content creators. The comprehensive audio package combines wireless transmitters and a receiver capable of direct recording to a Sony camera or other devices via USB-C, capturing 96kHz audio from a distance of up to 500 meters in line-of-sight conditions.

The hardware package includes two microphone transmitters and one rectangular receiver. For creators looking to expand their setup, standalone components are available, with the ECM-W5 system supporting up to four simultaneous tracks if additional transmitters are purchased separately.

Camera Integration and Audio Features

The system is optimized for use with Sony's Alpha series cameras, connecting seamlessly through the Multi Interface Shoe to receive power and transfer data directly. This integration minimizes cable clutter during shoots and streamlines the recording process for solo creators and professional videographers alike.

Each transmitter features 64GB of internal memory, providing a reliable backup recording option. This internal storage also enables 32-bit float recording, allowing the kit to capture both very quiet and extremely loud sounds without requiring manual gain adjustments in the field.

Versatility and Connectivity Options

Unlike some competing offerings, Sony's system includes support for external lavalier microphones and other professional mic configurations, a feature frequently required by broadcasters. The transmitters offer up to 11 hours of battery life and feature magnetic backplates for convenient clothing attachment.

For users operating outside of Sony's camera ecosystem, the receiver includes a USB-C adapter for connection to smartphones and PCs. Additionally, while monitoring or adjusting settings on the receiver's touchscreen, users can listen to playback wirelessly via Bluetooth LE using compatible Sony headphones.
