The Lenfest Institute for Journalism announced the next phase of the Lenfest AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program, building upon an initiative that originated from a launch in 2024 with AI engineering fellows embedded in 11 major American news organizations.

The program has demonstrated that embedded AI engineers can help local news organizations accelerate innovation, strengthen business sustainability, and responsibly adopt emerging technology. This expansion is backed by a new $5 million commitment from OpenAI, alongside up to $5 million in software credits and engineering support, effectively doubling OpenAI's previous support.

This latest milestone forms part of OpenAI’s broader work supporting journalism, connecting advanced artificial intelligence capabilities with professional newsrooms seeking digital transformation.

Embedding Technologists in Operating Newsrooms

The Lenfest AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program places full-time AI technologists directly into operating news organizations to drive business innovation in local journalism. Over the past two years, the program has evolved from an ambitious pilot into a proven model for helping local news organizations develop guardrails and strategies for adopting AI.

As the initiative enters its next stage, The Lenfest Institute will invite a new group of news organizations to join the cohort, facilitating responsible AI experimentation and implementation under rigorous editorial standards.

AI engineering fellows work side-by-side with newsroom leaders, reporters, product teams, revenue staff, and executives to identify organization-specific challenges. Their goal is to build practical AI engineering solutions while ensuring that human judgment, editorial integrity, expertise, and trust remain central to local journalism.

Practical Applications Across Participating Newsrooms

Over the past two years, participating organizations have developed numerous practical applications that demonstrate how artificial intelligence can support the full breadth of a modern news enterprise.

At The Philadelphia Inquirer, the fellowship supported the creation of Dewey, a tool designed to help journalists search decades of archived reporting. It also helped build Scrape, a monitoring tool that transformed a time-consuming reporting task into a daily digest of potential story leads.

Meanwhile, Chicago Public Media utilized AI-assisted translation workflows to publish time-sensitive Spanish-language coverage efficiently, while also transcribing audio archives that had been stored away for decades.

Leadership Perspectives on Trust and Collaboration

Lenfest Institute Executive Director and CEO Jim Friedlich emphasized that the most valuable lesson learned over the first two years of the initiative is that responsible AI adoption relies heavily on trust rather than just the technology itself.

Friedlich noted that the fellows successfully helped their respective news organizations build practical tools and drive culture change from the inside through clear guardrails, policy standards, and open communication.

Tom Rubin, OpenAI Chief of Intellectual Property and Content, praised the partnership, stating that it has been wonderful to observe practical examples of journalists using AI to deliver quality local news to their communities.

Future Outlook and Collaborative Innovation

Throughout the pilot phase, projects began to travel naturally from one newsroom to another. Fellows shared code, adapted ideas from peer organizations, and compared implementation strategies to solve common industry challenges.

The success of the deployment has even led several engineering fellows to stay on as full-time employees at multiple participating news organizations, illustrating the tangible value of embedding technical talent locally.

With the newly announced funding and resources, The Lenfest Institute aims to scale these learnings to additional newsrooms, fostering continued innovation and sustainable growth across the American media landscape.
