Starshield Restored to Normal Operations for Ukrainian Military
SpaceX has seemingly removed restrictions on the Ukrainian military's usage of Starshield, bringing the internet system back to normal operational parameters after a tense period of connectivity loss.

Starshield Operations Resume for Ukraine
SpaceX appears to have lifted restrictions on the Ukrainian military's use of Starshield, which serves as the military-grade version of the company’s Starlink internet system. The Wall Street Journal reports that Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara told reporters that Starshield appears to be working normally again. Despite the return to normal functionality, the military is still actively conducting tests and has not yet received an official explanation regarding the prior restrictions.
This operational recovery follows a disruptive 10-day period. During that span, Ukrainian drones would lose internet connectivity whenever they flew at speeds of around 100 miles per hour. As a result, the military lost control of several drones entirely, while others were forced to fly more slowly, leaving them significantly more vulnerable in active operations.
Political Intervention and Calls to Action
High-level political discussions reportedly played a role in the sudden shift. President Donald Trump allegedly called SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on a Wednesday and asked him to restore the Starshield service. Both Trump and Musk have previously expressed criticism regarding Ukraine’s leadership, with Musk recently posting commentary declaring that President Volodymyr Zelensky had gone too far.
The situation underscores the profound geopolitical influence wielded by private space and telecommunications infrastructure companies. As the conflict continues, the reliability of satellite internet remains a critical bottleneck and lifeline for defense operations on the frontline.
Previous Reporting and Musk's Defense
Prior coverage highlighted tensions between the tech billionaire and regional defense needs. The WSJ previously reported that Musk ordered SpaceX to throttle Ukraine’s Starlink access. While some sources suggested he had discussed the potential move with the Trump administration first, Musk defended his position publicly.
Musk later claimed in a post on X that Ukraine had violated Starlink terms of service by using the network for offensive drone strikes intended to kill people. In his post, Musk emphasized the network's overarching importance to the regional conflict, stating that if Starlink were to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately. He explicitly characterized his statement as a fact rather than a direct threat.
Ongoing Testing and Future Outlook
Even though network connectivity appears to have stabilized, Ukrainian defense officials are proceeding with caution. The ongoing tests being carried out by the military are designed to ensure that data links and drone control systems remain fully functional under various flight conditions and speeds.
The episode highlights the complex friction points between commercial satellite operators and sovereign military entities engaged in active warfare. With Starshield back online, operations can proceed, but the underlying policy questions regarding terms of service, national security, and corporate control remain largely unresolved.
