Replit Makes OpenAI Default Over Anthropic, CEO Says

The Strategic Shift at TechCrunch Disrupt

Speaking onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt, Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad stated that the popular AI coding platform is no longer working with Anthropic in the same capacity, opting instead to make OpenAI its default model provider. The announcement surprised many in the artificial intelligence sector, given the close historical ties between the two companies.

Masad explained that the decision was driven by multiple factors, including performance evaluations, cost considerations, and partnership fit. He noted that internal and public benchmarks indicated favorable performance when building applications from scratch.

Impact on Anthropic Integration and Platform Usage

Although OpenAI has stepped in as the preferred provider, Anthropic has not been entirely removed from the ecosystem. Following the conference appearance, Masad clarified that users can still access Anthropic models on the browser-based software development platform. However, because most users rely on default settings, the change is expected to significantly reduce Replit's spending with Anthropic.

Prior to the OpenAI agreement, Replit depended heavily on Anthropic’s Claude models to power its infrastructure. That previous collaboration was widely credited with helping the company scale its revenue exponentially, with Masad noting that Replit had recently ranked among Anthropic's top five customers.

Conflicting Accounts and Recent Promotions

Despite Masad's statements onstage regarding the status of the relationship, industry insiders familiar with the partnership contested the characterization, suggesting that collaborative work between the firms remained active. Furthermore, promotional materials on social media, blogs, and documentation highlighted Anthropic products in active production environments as recently as weeks prior to the announcement.

Clarifying the platform's current technical stance, Masad emphasized that Replit continues to operate as a model-agnostic environment, leaving room for users to select alternative configurations while designating OpenAI as the preferred partner for core agent operations.

Enterprise Growth and Future Outlook

Alongside the partnership updates, Masad shared key metrics regarding the company's financial evolution, highlighting a major pivot toward enterprise and business-to-business contracts. While enterprise revenue accounted for just two percent of the total last year, it expanded to approximately fifteen percent, with B2B channels generating more than half of overall revenue.

Looking ahead, Masad projected that enterprise and government customers will drive over half of Replit's revenue by 2027, underscoring the importance of robust security, sandboxing, and operational habitats for autonomous coding agents.
