Releasing Trillion-Parameter Model Weights

French AI company Mistral has released the weights for its trillion-parameter open source AI model Mistral Large 4 (ML4), allowing businesses and governments to download and deploy the system themselves. Nicknamed “Le Chonk,” the model was first [introduced earlier this month] to compete directly in the open-weight ecosystem.

The release of the model's numerical training weights ensures that other companies and government agencies can now deploy ML4 for their own purposes. According to Mistral, the system offers a level of control over cyber defenses that closed-model providers cannot match.

Empowering Sovereign Cyber Defense

The release comes as competition between open-weight AI developers and closed-model providers intensifies. Mistral argues that organizations should not have to rely on outside companies for advanced capabilities, a sentiment that holds particular weight in the cybersecurity sector where data and system control are paramount.

Mistral’s CEO, Arthur Mensch, explained that artificial intelligence should function as a tool for empowerment rather than dominance. With Chonk, the company aims to achieve state-of-the-art performance using a fraction of the compute and capital committed by closed labs.

“Amid growing cyber threats, ML4 brings state-of-the-art sovereign cyber defense capabilities to enterprises and governments globally,” the company stated. Enterprise and public sector institutions can now download, deploy, and own frontier AI to detect, analyze, and respond to threats across code and IT infrastructure.

Performance and Efficiency Benchmarks

Mistral notes that its new system is comparable in performance to GLM-5.3, a Chinese open-weight competitor [previously considered] one of the best globally for cyber tasks. However, Mistral’s model uses 47 percent fewer tokens per task, making it significantly more economical.

Additionally, the company claims that ML4 outranks all other open models for agentic coding tasks on Artificial Analysis’ Coding Agent Index. The weights are currently made available on Hugging Face and through the company's API.

On-Premises Deployment and Real-Time Defense

Pierre Stock, Vice President of Science at Mistral, emphasized that open-weight deployment grants organizations direct control over their digital defense mechanisms. Because the model is open-weighted, businesses and governments maintain access that cannot be abruptly cut off by outside parties.

Stock added that the model allows enterprises to identify, coordinate, and respond in real time to major security incidents directly within their own on-premises ecosystems. While advanced AI tools help security professionals find bugs faster, Stock stressed the importance of making these capabilities available universally to strengthen the broader ecosystem against malicious actors.

Addressing Security Risks

Addressing concerns regarding recent incidents involving rogue AI agents, Stock acknowledged the underlying risks while urging observers to avoid overreacting. He noted that while security remains a complex challenge, the industry can solve these problems without resorting to excessive fearmongering.
