Google Announces $179 Fitbit Edge Tracker With Screen And GPS

Design and Display

Google is following the Fitbit Air launched in May with a second tracker that features a screen called the Fitbit Edge. The new device comes equipped with a wide, pill-shaped AMOLED screen protected by Gorilla Glass 3, delivering 46% more display area than the older Charge 6 model released in 2023.

Measuring 11.5mm thick, the body of the Fitbit Edge is crafted from aluminum using nano-molding technology. This manufacturing approach allows for a 40% more precise GPS system compared to the Charge 6, while a dedicated altimeter handles elevation tracking. For tactile control during activities like swimming, users can utilize a large physical button located on the right side of the housing. The device also carries IP68 and 5ATM ratings for dust and water resistance.

Sensors and Health Tracking

On the underside of the casing, the Fitbit Edge houses a comprehensive suite of health and movement sensors. These include an accelerometer, altimeter, ambient light sensor, far-field skin temperature sensor, and a gyroscope. For cardiovascular and general wellness monitoring, the tracker includes a heart rate sensor, multipurpose electrical sensors for ECG readings, and red and infrared sensors for SpO2 tracking.

The Exercise app preloaded on the device permits tracking across more than 50 distinct activity types, complete with real-time guidance and specialized workout views. Furthermore, the Fitbit Edge can connect directly to workout equipment via heart rate broadcasting capabilities.

Software and AI Features

Running on a Fitbit operating system inspired by the Pixel Watch 5, the Edge supports both Android and iOS platforms. The expanded screen real estate facilitates a richer user interface. Detailed customization options for watch faces and complications can be managed directly through the Google Health app.

Swiping left or right from the primary watch face reveals customizable tiles for quick start exercise modes, focus metrics, sleep tracking, heart rate data, cycle health, weather, timers, alarms, and music controls. Music controls function with any application on a paired device, and phone notifications are supported. However, quick message replies remain exclusive to Android due to iOS platform constraints. Google Maps navigation is also supported, though NFC is absent, meaning Google Wallet is not included.

Both the Fitbit Edge and the accompanying Fitbit Air feature upgraded automatic activity detection. This system utilizes AI-powered contextual reasoning to learn user habits over time, extending support to more than 100 activities.

Battery Life and Repairability

Power management on the Fitbit Edge relies on the same magnetic USB-C charger utilized by the Fitbit Air. A quick five-minute charge supplies a full day of battery usage, whereas a complete recharge takes 90 minutes. With the always-on display turned off, the battery lasts approximately one week. Enabling the always-on display reduces battery longevity to roughly two days. Notably, the device shares a repair-friendly design with the Pixel Watch 5, allowing the casing to be opened so users can replace the battery.

Pricing, Colors, and Availability

The Fitbit Edge is offered in three color configurations: a Matte Black Aluminum case paired with an Obsidian Active Band, a Polished Silver Aluminum case with a Fog Active Band, and a Satin Pyrite Aluminum case featuring an Olive Active Band. Bands can be swapped easily using a new mechanism, and additional band options include the Active Sport, Magnet Band, and Performance Loop.

The standard model of the Google Fitbit Edge is priced at $179.99, with pre-orders opening immediately and general availability scheduled for October 27. Additionally, a Stephen Curry Special Edition is offered at $219.99, bundled with a custom band design.
