Google Introduces New Model Access Limits for Gemini Users
Google is rolling out structural changes to the Gemini app that restrict model access for free users and AI Plus subscribers.

Overview of Gemini Model Access Changes
Google is introducing significant changes to the model availability within the Gemini app following earlier updates made earlier in the year. Following the compute-based usage change in May, the company is now establishing strict tiers regarding which underlying artificial intelligence models different subscription levels can access.
The details were outlined in an updated support document published this week, which outlines how free tier users and paid subscribers will interact with the platform moving forward. The adjustments mark a shift in how resources are partitioned across the entire Gemini app ecosystem.
Restrictions for Free and AI Plus Users
Under the new policy structure, users of the Gemini app without any active Google AI subscription will find their choices restricted strictly to the 3.5 Flash-Lite model. Starting on October 9, individuals who do not pay for a subscription tier will no longer be able to access the 3.6 Flash or 3.1 Pro options.
Meanwhile, customers paying for the AI Plus subscription will face their own set of limitations. Subscribers at this level will be capped at using Flash-Lite and Flash, with the Pro model being removed from their available options. According to documentation, these $4.99 per month users will receive an email notifying them of the exact timeline for when these modifications will take effect.
Expansions for AI Pro and AI Ultra Subscribers
Fortunately, higher-tier paying customers will not experience any regressions in their service capabilities. Users subscribed to the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will retain their broad access while receiving notable feature additions to their accounts.
Specifically, $19.99 per month customers will gain access to the Deep Think option, which is designed for maximum parallel reasoning. Previously, this advanced capability was exclusive to higher plans priced at $99.99 and $199.99 per month, making it a valuable upgrade for professional and heavy users of the platform.
New Effort Levels and Task Completion Adjustments
Alongside the restructuring of model tiers, Google is planning to roll out new adjustable effort levels during the month of October. Users will be able to select between low, medium, and high effort settings for each available model.
This addition is intended to enhance the model's overall ability to complete difficult tasks and deliver much more thorough answers to user queries. However, utilizing higher effort levels will consume a greater portion of the user's established usage limits.
Currently, platform users are limited to adding a general extended thinking option for complex problem-solving. The introduction of these three distinct tier levels brings alignment with features already available in Google AI Studio and Antigravity.
