Anthropic Announces Claude Duet, Its New Proactive AI Agent

Introduction to Claude Duet

Anthropic is expanding its ecosystem with the introduction of a personal agent that will compete directly with existing systems like Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots. As part of a new research preview, the company announced Claude Duet to serve professionals and small business owners handling heavy workloads.

According to Anthropic, the system is built to monitor tasks, complete requested assignments, operate even when users step away, and verify actions before executing them on behalf of the user. Currently, users in the US can join a waitlist to gain access to the tool.

Capabilities and Background Execution

Like OpenAI, Anthropic is marketing Duet as a proactive agent. Each day, the system generates a brief featuring a list of action items pulled from connected applications. Users can hand the agent various assignments, ranging from basic administrative duties like scheduling meetings to more complex workflows such as building dashboards, generating financial or sales forecasts, prototyping, and constructing web apps.

Duet runs on Opus 5.5, one of the foundational models offered through Claude. To support this background functionality, Anthropic is releasing standalone Android and iOS apps, allowing the agent to function independently without requiring an open Claude session by executing tasks on its own virtual machine.

Pricing Tiers and Resource Management

A notable differentiator involves plan availability. Anthropic confirmed that subscribers to its $20 per month Pro plan will receive access once the agent reaches general availability. This pricing accessibility sets Duet apart from Dots, which are currently restricted to OpenAI's higher-tier subscribers on plans starting at $100 per month.

Because Duet shares usage limitations with other Claude tools like Code, Anthropic has engineered specific frequency controls to prevent rapid consumption of user plan limits. The agent checks connected accounts every few hours rather than continuously, and users retain control over how frequently Duet messages them and regarding which topics.

Security Measures and Privacy Protections

To address privacy concerns, Anthropic has integrated a new classifier and system prompt into Duet to prevent sensitive information leaks. The company states that the agent never directly views passwords or sign-in tokens. Furthermore, data related to health or personal finances is only accessible if the user explicitly grants permission for Duet to share it.

While proactive agents offer extensive digital integration, their utility heavily relies on user trust. Sharing deep context across an entire digital life remains a substantial threshold for many users considering AI agent adoption.
