Anbernic Reveals RG DDS Handheld with Matching 3DS Aspect Ratios

Anbernic Announces the RG DDS Dual-Screen Handheld

It has only been a year since Anbernic teased its previous multi-screen device, but the handheld company is already moving forward with a contemporary version of Nintendo's successor. The company officially revealed the RG DDS, which stands for "Dream Dual-Screen" and serves as an obvious nod to the Nintendo 3DS, according to details shared by Engadget in a report by Jackson Chen available via Google Discover.

Building upon its earlier releases, such as the hardware detailed in a previous remake of the Nintendo DS feature, the manufacturer aims to capture the nostalgia and functionality of classic dual-screen systems while upgrading the underlying processing power for modern emulation tasks.

Display Specifications and Aspect Ratios

The standout feature of the RG DDS lies in its display configuration, which offers matching aspect ratios tailored for playing classic titles. The clamshell handheld is built with a 4.7-inch main display sporting a 1,200 x 720 resolution to achieve a 5:3 aspect ratio. This is paired with a 4-inch secondary display running at a 960 x 720 resolution for a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Because of these specific dimensions, most gamers are likely going to use the device to replay their 3DS favorites. The official specifications and initial look were detailed by the manufacturer through the official RG DDS announcement.

Internal Hardware and Processing Power

Improving upon its predecessor, the RG DS, Anbernic chose Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip to power the new handheld. This hardware upgrade means the RG DDS should easily handle emulating software up to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 2 titles.

Outside of confirming the processor choice, Anbernic has not yet revealed the rest of the upcoming handheld's internal specifications, though it did confirm that the device packs a 6,000mAh battery to support extended gaming sessions.

Controls, Design, and Added Features

When it comes to physical layout, the RG DDS is almost an exact match to Nintendo's original handheld design. However, Anbernic introduced a notable modification by adding an extra analog stick on the right side of the control deck.

Additionally, the dual-screen device includes an extendable capacitive stylus that can be neatly tucked away when not in use. Anbernic also noted the inclusion of a dedicated AI button, though the company has not yet detailed exactly what features or software functions that button will activate.

Pricing, Availability, and Market Context

As is common with initial hardware reveals, the handheld maker excluded any specific pricing or release dates from the announcement. Observers and industry trackers expect the RG DDS to carry a price tag slightly higher than its $99 precursor.

Nevertheless, because Anbernic is widely known for delivering affordable hardware options, the device could potentially undercut alternative systems in the same category, such as the Retroid Pocket Duo and its Lite model variants that start at $149.
