Significant Price Drop on New Samsung Drive
While purchasing additional storage for a personal computer remains a costly endeavor due to ongoing market conditions, a new discount has emerged at Amazon. Samsung recently introduced a budget-focused version of its 990 M.2 solid-state drive, which has now received a substantial $200 price reduction. Shoppers looking to acquire the [Samsung 990 2TB SSD:: https://target.georiot.com/Proxy.ashx?tsid=45723&GR_URL=https%3A%2F%2Famazon.com%2FSamsung-Collectors-Archivists-MZ-V9V2T0B-AM%2Fdp%2FB0H1N9X2QR%3Ftag%3Dftr-tomshardware-us-20%26ascsubtag%3Dtomshardware-us-3290443532150506116-20] can purchase the unit for $329, down from its list price of $529, marking a notable 38% saving.
This particular model stands out as one of the few solid-state drives launched after the artificial intelligence pricing crunch impacted the storage market. Consequently, the initial pricing reflects Samsung's valuation of the hardware under current economic circumstances. Although storage solutions were less expensive previously, analysts note that a 38% price cut on a newly released drive offers a meaningful opportunity, particularly as industry indicators suggest storage costs may continue to rise rather than fall.
Performance and Specifications
The M.2 Gen 4 solid-state drive delivers sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,250 and 6,450 MB/s respectively. Product evaluations conducted following its launch last month highlighted its full-fledged Gen 4 throughput, moderate power consumption, and reliable all-around performance. Architecturally, the regular 990 functions similarly to a QLC-based 990 EVO Plus, utilizing Samsung's proprietary PiccoloQ controller alongside V9 QLC Flash memory.
Benchmark testing indicates that the drive performs very closely to the 990 EVO Plus during latency evaluations while outperforming the standard 990 EVO in overall bandwidth and 3DMark scores. Furthermore, testing demonstrated strong compatibility as a storage expansion option for the PlayStation 5 console.
Comparison With Alternative Models
At its standard list price, the regular 990 model struggles to compete directly against higher-end alternatives such as the 990 Pro or Samsung's Gen 5 9100. However, with the current promotional pricing applied, this drive presents a more affordable alternative compared to those premium tiers.
For consumers interested in alternative configurations, Amazon is also featuring a 36% discount on the 2TB 990 Pro, lowering its price from $639 to $409. Alternatively, users whose motherboards support Gen 5 hardware can opt for the 2TB 9100 Pro, which is currently listed at $415. Meanwhile, a 1TB version of the standard 990 is also on sale, though its smaller 17% discount brings the price to $189.99, rendering it a less economical choice compared to the heavily discounted 2TB variant.
Broader Storage Market Trends
Storage component costs have remained elevated, and market observers indicate that relief is unlikely to arrive in the near term. Persistent pressures from AI-related demand continue to influence the component pricing landscape, leading experts to suggest that delaying hardware purchases could result in even higher expenses down the road.
