Reddit Rolls Out Separate 'For You' and 'Following' Feeds

A Major Homepage Redesign

Reddit has announced a significant update to its homepage experience by rolling out a new feed layout that divides content into separate "For You" and "Following" sections. As [announced] on Wednesday, the platform is shifting away from a single mixed feed to give users more distinct choices in how they consume content.

This modification brings Reddit into closer alignment with other mainstream social platforms that utilize recommendation-driven tabs. Up until now, the platform combined recommended posts alongside updates from communities that users had already joined into a single main timeline.

How the New Feeds Function

Under the updated architecture, the "Following" feed exclusively displays posts from subreddits that users actively subscribe to, offering a more controlled viewing environment. Meanwhile, the "For You" feed blends posts from joined communities with algorithmic recommendations tailored to individual user interests.

According to the company, this dedicated recommendation feed is designed to help users discover relevant conversations and communities they might not have otherwise encountered. Reddit hopes the change will foster greater connection, participation, and a sense of belonging across the platform.

Platform Discovery and Engagement Goals

Reddit has stated that this new feed experience is a foundational step toward driving discovery that leads to novel and relevant connections, ideas, and perspectives. The feature aims to encourage users to explore content and communities outside of their usual subscriptions.

The restructuring follows earlier moves by the company to adjust its homepage layout, including deprecating r/all as part of ongoing efforts to simplify navigation and improve Home feed personalization. By giving algorithmic recommendations their own dedicated space, the platform aims to make discovery more prominent.

User Controls and Interface Behavior

While algorithmic feeds are standard across much of social media, they can also elicit mixed reactions from long-time users who prefer strict chronological or subscription-only timelines. Some users who encountered the new layout during initial testing have already voiced frustration regarding unsolicited recommendations appearing on their home pages.

To mitigate potential friction, Reddit has built persistent memory into the navigation. The app remembers which feed a user viewed last, ensuring that closing the tab or restarting the application returns the user directly to their preferred choice.

Global Rollout and Future Experiments

The new feed experience is rolling out globally over the coming weeks. The company noted in its official [blog post] that it will continue experimenting with additional navigation methods and ways for users to explore content intentionally.

Additionally, Reddit is working on tools that allow users to provide feedback on recommended content, making it easier to fine-tune suggestions and shape future algorithmic delivery across the platform.
