OpenAI Rolls Out Texting Support for Dot Personal Agents

OpenAI has officially launched a preview feature allowing US Pro users to text their Dot agents using iMessage and RCS messaging.

OpenAI Rolls Out Texting Support for Dot Personal Agents

Introduction to Dot Texting Support

When OpenAI initially debuted its Dot agents late last month, the company promised that users would eventually be able to interact with and instruct their agents via text messages. Now, nearly a month after that initial unveiling, OpenAI has officially begun rolling out a preview of this exact functionality among US Pro users.

With this newly introduced feature, OpenAI states that users can send their Dot agents a variety of communication formats, including standard texts, shared photos, and even voice memos. Furthermore, this update establishes an alternate communication channel, allowing your Dot to proactively reach out with updates regarding tasks you have assigned to it.

Setting Up and Supported Messaging Standards

According to details shared by the company via social media, the capability is designed to work seamlessly through popular messaging standards. Specifically, the feature functions with both iMessage and RCS messaging protocols, accommodating users across different mobile operating systems.

To configure a Dot for texting, users must open its profile directly within ChatGPT and select the Texting menu option. On the mobile device side, users must ensure that iMessage is actively enabled if they are using an iPhone, or RCS if their primary daily driver is an Android device.

Security Measures and Memory Integration

To deliver this messaging functionality, OpenAI has partnered with Linq to provide the necessary backend messaging support. To address potential privacy and safety concerns, OpenAI reported that it performed extensive penetration testing to ensure the feature remains secure.

Regarding privacy boundaries, the company noted that users maintain exclusive communication access, emphasizing that you are the only one who can text your dot, and your dot can only text you. Additionally, any information that a Dot writes to its memory is shared across both ChatGPT and text conversations, ensuring that context carries over fluidly between different interaction modes.

Competitive Landscape in Personal AI Agents

The personal agent space has become exceptionally competitive, particularly after Anthropic joined the market with its own competitor. This rapid expansion follows recent industry introductions, highlighting how quickly major AI developers are moving to offer persistent personal assistant solutions to consumers.

Initial evaluations suggest that OpenAI's Dots offer a comparatively polished experience. However, accessibility constraints remain a notable factor for users looking to experiment with these emerging tools, as availability rules and subscription tier limitations continue to shape how consumers adopt and test these artificial intelligence platforms.
