Anthropic Acquires Opaque Systems

Anthropic has acquired Opaque Systems, a company that developed specialized technology enabling artificial intelligence systems to utilize sensitive data while keeping it securely protected by the underlying hardware. According to SecurityWeek, Opaque announced the transaction, confirming that its team is officially joining Anthropic to carry its work forward. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed by either party involved in the deal.

Origins and Evolution to Verifiable AI

Opaque originally began as a research project a decade ago at UC Berkeley’s RISELab. Its founders include Ion Stoica, who co-founded Databricks and Anyscale, alongside Raluca Ada Popa, an encryption and systems security researcher who currently works at Google DeepMind. Aaron Fulkerson later joined the organization as its CEO in October 2023. Over time, the startup transitioned its confidential computing research into practical technology deployed in production AI environments. As artificial intelligence continued to evolve, the company recognized that protecting standalone data and models was no longer sufficient for organizations demanding higher standards of security.

"As AI evolved, so did the problem we set out to solve. Protecting data and models was no longer enough. Organizations also needed a way to independently verify how AI systems and agents behaved," Opaque explained regarding the shift in their strategic roadmap. This realization propelled the company to expand beyond standard confidential AI into verifiable AI, which aims to replace traditional trust assumptions with cryptographic evidence detailing precisely what code ran, where it executed, and under what operational policies.

Open Source Community Projects and Ecosystem Work

Alongside its proprietary technology deployments, Opaque engaged extensively with the wider technology community on various open-source initiatives designed to enhance trust and security for modern AI models and autonomous agents. Among these notable community-driven projects are the Agent Governance Toolkit, an open standard for runtime attestation known as TRACE, Confidential MCP, and the Weight Custody Manifest. These tools were developed to help address growing safety, transparency, and governance requirements across the broader artificial intelligence sector.

Funding History and Customer Base

Prior to the acquisition by Anthropic, Opaque achieved significant financial backing within the technology market. Earlier this year, the company successfully secured a $24 million Series B funding round, which valued the startup at approximately $300 million. Before winding down operations, Opaque counted major enterprise names among its client roster, including acquirer Anthropic itself, alongside corporate giants ServiceNow and Accenture.

Operations Wind Down and Future Outlook

Following the completion of the agreement, updates to Opaque's official website confirmed that its core team is joining Anthropic to continue development efforts, while Opaque Systems as a corporate entity is actively winding down its operations. At the time of the announcement, the startup had not yet clarified what this corporate wind-down process means for its existing enterprise customers and ongoing service agreements. The transaction highlights the continuous consolidation and talent acquisition trends shaping the high-stakes enterprise artificial intelligence landscape.
