Cloudflare Ranks Fastest Across 74% of Top Networks
Cloudflare has announced a major network performance update during its latest Birthday Week, revealing that it now ranks as the fastest provider across 74% of the world's top 1,000 networks.

Network Performance Milestone
Cloudflare has announced a significant performance update shared via the Cloudflare Blog, revealing that it is now the fastest provider across 74% of the world's top 1,000 networks. This marks a substantial increase from the 60% figure reported during previous updates in April 2026.
The company notes that this improvement stems from becoming the fastest provider in an additional 150 networks out of the top 1,000, along with ranking first in 38 additional countries. These metrics are evaluated by determining the fastest provider for users on networks serving the highest volume of users in each respective country.

Measurement Methodology and APNIC Data
To evaluate global performance, the company's analysis begins with the 1,000 largest networks globally, ranked by estimated user population using data from APNIC. Connection times are measured by the amount of time required for a user's device to complete a TCP handshake when requesting content.
To rank providers accurately, Cloudflare calculates the trimean of connection times, combining the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles into a weighted average. Detailed explanations of this metric and historical comparisons are available through previous posts published by the network team.

Expanding Real-User Telemetry with Challenge Pages
Beyond traditional error pages used since 2021, Cloudflare has expanded its real-user measurement scale by incorporating background telemetry from Cloudflare Challenge Pages. These are full-page screens designed to verify visitors before they access a website, typically triggered by Web Application Firewall rules.
Challenge Pages are delivered using Cloudflare Turnstile, a privacy-preserving, risk-based challenge technology that runs directly in the browser. Developers looking to implement these protections can review the official Cloudflare Challenge Pages documentation for integration guidelines.

Background Measurement Mechanics
The measurement process on Challenge Pages operates quietly in the background without requiring extra user action. While a visitor views a challenge, the browser fetches lightweight files from a fixed set of endpoints, including Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, Google, Fastly, and Akamai, and records the connection duration.
This methodology allows Cloudflare to gather performance data under genuine Internet conditions across a diverse set of networks and geographies. The company applies these measurements strictly to a small fraction of eligible free Challenge Pages to ensure end-user performance and user experience remain entirely unaffected.
